The foyer in my Paris townhouse is very small--just 7 inches wide and 12 inches deep. This is because I moved the entrance to the right side (from the middle) and made a big kitchen--no surprise, given how much I love kitchen stuff and food.
Another thing I did when I reconfigured the house was take out all the staircases. I thought they took up too much room. This is such a small house, and as I am not planning to run any dolls up and down, I just eliminated them.
Nonetheless, I wanted to have a stairway in the foyer that looks like it goes up to the other floors, even it most of it was going to be hidden behind an arched wall. Because I have no talent in this direction, I enlisted Michael Walton to build the stairs and Bill McGuire to marble them. Then I asked Jason Getzan if he would please, please, please make me a wrought iron railing. Finally he relented and I got my wish.
Here are the stairs with their new railing...are they not gorgeous?
Another view...
And looking down...
I am so happy with the way this whole thing looks that I am now reconsidering the arched wall plan. I may just create an arch near the ceiling so more of the stairs show.
What do you think?

Sophia, I can't visualize the arched wall plan because I don't think you ever showed it. However, I would do everything I could if I were you to highlight these stairs. They're gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI think your stairs and railing are gorgeous! Possibly the prettiest I have ever seen! Quite impressive. :)
ReplyDeleteMichael, Bill and Jason all did fabulous work. They are very elegant indeed.
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Julie
The stairs and the railing are so wonderful! Love them!

Beautiful!!!!! I love the way that railing curves around. Judith x
ReplyDeleteIt is beautiful! What material is the handrail made from? The marbling looks greet too. Thank
ReplyDeleteYou are all so good to leave such nice comments!
ReplyDeleteTroy, the railing is made of wrought iron. Jason said it was very difficult to make and I believe it! Look at all those curves!

Hi Sophia,
ReplyDeleteIt is spectacular. If the arch is large enough to allow a good view of the staircase I think it could add a lot of realism. Lighting behind the arch can also add a lot of drama and make the staircase stand out!
Can't wait to see it in place.
All the best,
Giac
I adore that railing, and the stairs! Wonderful!!
ReplyDeleteLove, Susanne
Sophia, it is superb! I can understand why you want to show them off. Still a bit of an arch would add some depth to the small space, don't you think?
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!

Hello Sophia!
ReplyDeleteStaircase is beautiful! Thank you for sending me a picture of it in the "raw". It was extremely helpful to me in doing my own version of it. The curved part was leaving me baffled until I received your e-mail. Again thank you for sharing. So let's see more!

I think they're lovely and well worth showing off.
ReplyDeleteI feel unworthy of even commenting - they are beautiful! I'm laughing because on my blog , I wrote a post on "Suspending disbelief. " Even though my skills are "emerging" , I can't stand not having a way to get from floor to floor.
ReplyDeleteIt's very clever (I also try to ensure that the staircase takes as little space as possible in my miniature houses). Yours is very beautiful and gives the illusion that it can continue behind a wall to the top floor.
ReplyDeleteI can not wait to see it in situation in the house. ;)
The stairs are beautiful, I love the hand rail, and the marbling is very fine!!
ReplyDeleteAfter due consideration (LOL) I've decided on an arch at the top of the wall so that as much of the stairs show as possible while maintaining the illusion that they go somewhere! My buddy Bill and I spent a bunch of time this week mapping out how to liven up the foyer--so there will be an arch and there will also be a false door on the left side (more illusions, since one would not want one's guests to go from the foyer into the kitchen, even in a dollhouse). So thank you all for weighing in on this dilemma. Soon I hope to be able to show you the paneliing in the salon, among other things Bill is helping me with.
ReplyDeleteI'm looking for the "like" button. :)
